Back to School Balancing Act-Homework and Standardized Tests

Back to School-How to Balance Standardized Tests with Schoolwork

School is back in swing, and many standardized tests (SATs, ACTs, SSATs, ISEEs) are around the corner.
Check out these 5 tips to keep your family sane as your child prepares for the tests.

1. Scheduling-I oftentimes tell students to use the weeknights for schoolwork and the weekends to study for standardized tests. Making a schedule and sticking to it will help to regiment the process and make sure enough time is spent on all demands.

2. Efficiency-Make sure that your child is studying for both school tests and standardized tests in the most efficient way possible. As students get older, tools like flashcards may need to be replaced with rapid note-taking and review.

3. Overlap-Encourage your child to realize how certain skills learned in school can help him prepare for standardized tests. There is an increasing overlap between school curriculum and standardized tests.

4. Read Read Read-About 65% of each standardized test involves reading. Even in the math sections, word problems account for a substantial portion of the questions. Encouraging your child to read on a daily basis will ease the standardized testing preparation and help them to reach new heights of academic achievement in school! Reading the Wall Street Journal or NYTimes Op-eds is great practice for advanced middle and high school students.
