5 Tips for the Hardest SAT Questions

Follow these 5 math tips to tackle even the hardest questions!

1. Just start working. Even if you have no idea how to solve the problem, start working it out. Write down all the information you know and draw a picture if applicable. Things might start to click as you work through the problem and you may figure out how to solve it.

2. Convert fractions. Sometimes working in fractions can be helpful, but other times it can slow you down. If you need to know information such as which fraction is greater, converting all the fractions to decimals can make it much easier to see the answer. Also try this with numbers including pi and square roots.

3. Use real numbers. If you are stuck on a problem with multiple variables in the question and answer choices then this tip is perfect. Do not work blindly with variables. Assign numbers to the variables and work through the problem. Then, plug in the numbers for the answer choices and see which one matches the answer you got beforehand.

4. Assign a total. When working with complicated fraction or percentage problems assign a total. 100 usually works well, or you can try another multiple of the fractions you are taking in the problems. This will help because when you take 1/2 of your original, you will still easily be able to take 1/6th of the left over.  Once you do all the operations, you can just take your leftover over the total you assigned to see how much of a fraction is left.

5. Don’t get discouraged. The last few problems on the SAT Math sections start to seem very difficult. Instead of getting scared, remember that the questions are easier than you think. You have all the tools and knowledge to answer the question, you just need to figure out the approach.
