New Redesigned SAT Math-Heart of Algebra-Linear Equations and Functions

The following math question is an example of a new math question for the Redesigned SAT, set to launch in March 2015. This question aligns with the goal of a students ability to interpret variables and constants in linear functions

A team of students creates a linear model for GPA. They find the SAT score can help to predict GPA. Using data from 100 students, they graph the relationship between these two variables. Equation i represents the line of best fit.

(i)                  GPA=2.4 + .08*SAT

What does 2.4 mean????

-2.4 is the y intercept of the line of best fid

-Even with an SAT of 0, the student has a baseline GPA of 2.4

-Also, 2.4 is the y-intercept of the line of best fit.

What does .08 symbolize?

-When SAT increases by 1 point, GPA rises by .08 points

-When SAT increases by 100 points, GPA rises by 8 points.
