How can you encourage your daughter to excel in math?
1. Positive reinforcement-constantly remind your children that they are good at math. Anytime you hear “I hate math” respond with positivity and confidence in your child’s natural ability.
2. Reformulate problems-We formulate math problems to be equally appealing to girls and boys. Many old textbooks featured word problems with trains and trucks. We write math problems geared toward all interests including fashion and design.
3. Communicate with Teachers-Make sure that your child’s teachers know that it is essential that your child is encouraged and promoted in math class.
4. Advocate-Make sure your daughter is put in an advanced math class even starting in 3rd or 4th grade.
5. Practice and Preparation-Many students can be easily discouraged. One B and they decide they are bad at math. To avoid this situation, encourage math practice and review throughout the year. Remind your child that one bad grade does not matter and does not reflect true skill level.
