Follow these math tips to improve your score and become a better test taker!
1. Know what you are looking for. Questions may seem simple, but many have a twist at the end that can make you choose the wrong answer. For example, the question may be asking for x + 5, not just x. Paying attention to detail and knowing exactly what the question is asking can keep you from making small mistakes and ensure you choose the correct answer.
2. Learn math lingo. If you know math lingo you can do a better job at deciphering and breaking down complicated word problems to create something more manageable. Some examples include: of=multiply, per=divided by, and is=equals.
3. Memorize formulas. The SAT does provide certain formulas for reference, but you will work faster if you just memorize these formulas so you do not have to go searching through the booklet during the test. Specifically try to memorize the 30-60- 90 & 45-45- 90 triangle rules.
4. Avoid 0 and 1. People often use the method of plugging in numbers for variables for involved algebraic questions. Although this can be a useful tactic, always avoid plugging in 0 and 1. These numbers have special properties that can lead you to the wrong answer.
5. Draw it out! Complicated geometry problems become a lot simpler when you have a visual aid. Drawing out the problem can lead you to an answer a lot quicker by giving you a different perspective.
