The SAT is Changing-Why?

The SAT is changing again! Why?

1. It is time for a change. Most major standardized tests change about every 10 years. The last change was in 2005.

2. Some universities did not widely adopt the SAT Writing Section on the current test. The New Redesigned SAT will revert back to a 1600 scale and do away with the separate Writing Section.

3. Criticism about vocab -The current SAT tests vocabulary quite heavily and can include rather obscure words (treacly, maudlin, nadir to name just a few). The new test will scale back the vocab and feature words more familiar to the workaday college environment(words like empirical, derivative, latent).

4. Criticism about aptitude-Current and past SAT tests were mainly considered aptitude tests, requiring students to APPLY their knowledge to new and unfamiliar questions. We believe that the new SAT will depart somewhat from this and become more of an achievement based test.

We are hopeful that the Redesigned SAT will still test aptitude in addition to achievement. After all, high school academic achievement does not wholly predict performance in college and beyond.
